Elegy for Yesterday in E Minor
Composed by Merlyna Lim, 2023

Composed in September, this work began as a sunset elegy — a reflection on sorrow and the weight of shadowed days. The painting was started then but left unfinished, as the darkness in my head and the heaviness of my heart made it impossible to complete. By December, having emerged from that shadowed period, the painting was finally brought to life: a winter landscape of snow-covered ground, muted light, and lingering shadows, yet within it, hints of sunrise emerge, subtle glimmers of hope breaking through the cold.

Together, painting and music trace a journey from dusk to dawn, from shadow to light. Winter still holds the landscape, but the first rays of renewal appear, capturing the delicate balance between sorrow and the quiet resilience of hope.
