“Merlina” in Dordrecht

9 July 2006 1 views 6 Comments

A friend of mine, TJ, sent me email today. He told me that he is touring the Netherlands with his friends. Then he said, “.. last night we were eating diner in Dordrecht and found your name!!”

I was always told by Hispanic guys I met that Merlina (usually spelled Marlina or Marlena… and well, my name actually is Merlyna) is a Hispanic (Spanish/Mexican) name. But this isn’t a Mexican restaurant. This is Merlina the Chinese restaurant!

Instead of Hong Kong, Jet Lee, Kung Fu, Cap Coy, and whatever other possible Chinese names or typical Chinese shop names such as Dragon Star, Great Imperial, Taste of China, Food Kingdom … they chose Merlina! Strange….. but a perfect choice, guys…:)

I quote this from their website:
“Merlina, een vreemde naam voor een Chinees restaurant zou je denken. Maar In de Kantonese taal spreek je het uit als: Mei Ling, wat voor schoonheid staat. Dit is ook juist hetgene wat wij nastreven in onze gerechten, bediening en uitstraling.”

roughly translated as:
“Merlina, a strange name for a Chinese restaurant, don’t you think? In Cantonese the name is pronounced Mei Ling, stands for a beauty. This rightly represents what we aim to pursue in our management and services.”

Thanks TJ, for the picture. Be ready to find me again… everywhere…:)

delightful to find all these references to Merlina. I and The Great Love of My Life have just bought a yacht called Merlin, but as there is another with that name at our anchorage we decided to change the name to Merlina. I was thinking of the actress Merlina Mercuri who is FABULOUS. All power to the Merlinas!

mer: yes, hail to all Merlinas! :D
